Fall 2015 marked the launch of Discover Together’s Community Ambassador program. Community Ambassadors are community members with a drive to foster community connectedness. Community Ambassadors are introduced to and familiarize themselves with local, state, and national resources for families. Equipped with the knowledge of these programs, Community Ambassadors actively work to help connect families with these resources and the local community. Our current Ambassadors, Susan, Sara, and Sandy, are hard at work, making Grundy County a better place for children and families.
Susan Johnson grew up on Hobbs Hill in Tracy City and now lives in Coalmont with her husband and two children. For 12 years she worked with Pre-K families at Tracy City Elementary and assisted in opening all of the Pre-K’s in the county. Susan has developed a growing desire to assist families in finding resources and services. She believes that helping families obtain needed resources and connecting families to needed services will alleviate stress, improving the overall family environment.
Susan has faced many challenges and can relate to the issues that trouble families today. Susan graduated Suma Cum Laude from Chattanooga State in May 2014 with an Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Degree, without the assistance of student loans, while working full-time and caring for her family. Susan wants to help others potentially reach the same dream through scholarships and other grants.
Susan also has experience with the TennCare process, unemployment, and injuries that left her family with a significant loss of income. She has compassion, understands pride issues, and the fear that a family experiences. Susan knows that she can positively impact the lives of others in our community through her willingness to share the story of her own struggles. She wants to be your advocate and part of your solution!
Sara Griswold-Brown Is a native of Tracy City, where she is raising her three small children alongside her husband. Sara comes from a family committed to public education, and she also has a passion for education for everyone.
Sara received her Medical Assistant Degree and Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Wellness with honors at Kaplan University. Sara worked in the field of health and wellness at the University of Tennessee Extension Office in Coalmont while finishing college. During her employment, she implemented youth programs that focused on the healthier lifestyle choices, including diet and exercise.
On the rare occasion that Sara has time to herself, she enjoys reading, knitting, and painting. She also crafts objects out of rustic unused material that she finds at yard sales and flea markets. Sara’s creative energy is essential to Discover Together’s focus on children and families.
Sara is excited to become more involved in the community and she believes programs offered through these collaborative efforts are essential to helping our youth grow into healthy young adults and educating Grundy County citizens.
Sandy Dykes is a lifelong resident of Tracy City, Tennessee where she and her husband have raised two sons. Sandy loves working with children and worked in the Grundy County School system as a substitute for many years and as a paraprofessional for the last 5 years. Miss Sandy has been a teacher’s aide in the Camp Discover program since its inception in 2012. Driving the bus or playing on the playground, Miss Sandy is always the life of the party! Sandy’s willingness to dedicate her time and energy makes her an invaluable part of the Discover Together team. Beyond school and Camp Discover, Sandy makes an impact as an active member of Tracy City First United Methodist Church. Sandy’s particular ministry is driving a bus to pick up children on both Wednesday night and Sunday morning, helping children establish roots within a church community.
