Me, my community, my world…

Camp Discover is a two week-long summer program for students (age 6-12) that emphasizes community stories, heritage, and learning together. We celebrate community and build social connections through reading, photography, and telling stories.

In Grundy County, Discover Together uses place-based curricula to help children recognize the historical roles the railroad, coal industry, and world-class parks play to make Grundy County unique. Students take field trips to explore places that are unique to the region – from the Dutch Maid Bakery, to a worm farm that supplies the nation with fishing bait, to the Fiery Gizzard Trail and beyond.

They read books that link those places with the themes of community that are embedded in all of Discover Together’s programing. Through their own photography, students learn to look carefully at the world around, to tell their own stories, and imagine their future. Through stories and exploring their own community, children and families connect with each other, build a sense of pride in where they are from, and develop hope and excitement about where they are going.
